Massachusetts FOG & Grease Trap Rules

Massachusetts Title 5 requirements below apply to restaurants and supermarkets with septic systems.

Nonresidential Septic Systems

• Restaurants and supermarkets with septic systems must install grease traps.
• Inspect traps monthly. A licensed septage hauler must clean a trap when grease reaches 25 percent of effective depth or at least every three months, whichever comes first.
• The local Board of Health maintains lists of licensed septage haulers. Contact that office for local licensing and inspection requirements.
